Description

With a month-long lineup special events aimed at celebrating the West Coast’s iconic wild salmon, September is Salmon Month at the Aquarium of the Bay.

SalmonAid, a west coast-wide coalition of conservation organizations, fishing groups, sustainable seafood advocates, slow food chefs and first nations tribes, is banding together to raise awareness of the plight of our salmon populations, the rivers and streams they spawn in, and the many communities that rely on salmon for their livelihoods and survival.

Salmon Month will include a wide range of daily and special events, taking place at and around Aquarium of the Bay, including:

•September 1: Go Wild Gala at Aquarium of the Bay: Party with the sharks and enjoy wild salmon and other dishes from some of Northern California’s top chefs, along with a hosted bar, entertainment and lively discussions at this festive kick-off celebration. Guests will stroll through the Aquarium while enjoying sustainable seafood from some of the Bay Area's finest chefs, from restaurants including Murray Circle, Fish. Restaurant, Flea Street Cafe, Nettie's Crab Shack, and The Fatted Calf Charcuterie. The evening also includes live entertainment, a discussion about the state of our wild salmon populations and a hosted bar, provided by Terra Savia wine and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
Tickets are $125, and available at http://www.aquariumofthebay.org

•September 10: Meet the Fishermen: Local Fisherman tell stories about fishing and their vessels; Famed author and fisherman Bill Carter will screen a short film about commercial fishing in Alaska and discuss his experiences fishing for sockeye salmon in Alaska and read from his book, Red Summer. The book is the true story of Bill Carter’s experience set net fishing in Egegik, Alaska. Carter explores issues including the extreme debt taken on by fishermen, the intensely regulated work environment and the Pebble Mine that threatens to destroy the fishery. Free with Aquarium admission.

•September 11-12: Film Days – Films about rivers and salmon screening throughout the day. Free with Aquarium admission.

•September 15: Salmon Cinema & Storytelling Circle: The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival, the largest environmental film festival in North America, will screen some of the most compelling and dramatic films that bring our wild salmon crisis into focus. From communities in Bristol Bay, Alaska fighting mining operations proposed in the headwaters of the world’s strongest salmon rivers to grassroots salmon restoration efforts closer to home, these films put the salmon crisis—and the opportunities for salmon restoration—into a political, ecological, and cultural context.

In addition to the films, indigenous leaders will offer stories - both traditional salmon lore and tales of modern-day healing and collaboration for salmon recovery. The evening will be followed by a cocktail reception, taking place throughout the Aquarium. Tickets for this special evening of films, conversation, and celebration are only $15 and are available at http://www.aquariumofthebay.org

•September 18-19: Interactive, salmon-themed activities for kids, led by the Watershed Stewards Project, SPAWN, and the Institute for Fisheries Resources. Free with Aquarium admission.

•September 26: SalmonAid Festival: Celebrate Wild Pacific Salmon with a free outdoor music festival, adjacent to Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39. Join us for lively bands, interactive activities for salmon lovers of all ages, and opportunities to meet with organizations from up and down the coast that are working to protect and restore the wild Pacific salmon that have sustained us for centuries.
