Description
Joan, a teenage country girl who hears voices from God, is determined to kick the English out of France and crown the Dauphin, Charles, as King. Through sheer confidence and natural charisma, she manages to sway a skeptical Captain who, despite his own protests, agrees with his men that "There is something about her..." and gives this proud and naive rebel a soldier's armor and the means to get to the Dauphin. And so begins Joan's journey into the Hundred Years War and history, and Shaw's landmark play that accelerated him to the Nobel Prize. Considered his only tragedy, it is still infused with Shaw's signature wit: "His plays can scarcely prove other than lastingly delightful since they are the product of vigorous intelligence joined to inexhaustible comic invention."
