Description
SACRED ART OF TIBET - Art of the Buddha’s Teachings;Exhibit is first public event at the new Dharma College in downtown Berkeley.
Berkeley’s Dharma College presents its first public exhibition, “Sacred Art of Tibet - The Art of the Buddha’s Teachings,” from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 2222 Harold Way in downtown Berkeley, CA.
The exhibit is also open 2 to 4 p.m. on July 14 and 28; August 11 and 25 and concludes on September 8, 2012. Each exhibition event begins with a brief informal lecture on Tibetan art at 2-2:30 p.m., followed at 2:45 with docent-led tours of the exhibition.
The art show features a wide array of images in different media including original thanka paintings, giclées, lithographs, silkscreen illustrations and select reproductions, along with photographs of Tibet and other art works which contextualize the exhibit for the viewer. Much of the art speaks directly to the heart and intends to refresh the mind by conveying a sense of balance and joy.
Most pieces of art in the show are mounted in the traditional Tibetan way, framed in luxurious and vivid brocade, many with custom-created fabrics that feature auspicious symbols; some are draped with colorful hanging chevrons. The works are part of the collection curated by Dharma College founder Venerable Tibetan Lama Tarthang Tulku. Many original works from the show that includes over 150 full-color thankas and 200 silkscreen prints, will be seen for the first time. Some have been created to serve as illustrations for sacred books.
