Founded at a time when many heavy local bands were aping the Deftones--on through the years of cookie-cutter screamo acts and into the indie-centric 2010s--San Jose quartet Rivals have always charted their own course, eschewing trends and just doing what they do best: rollicking, rock & roll-oriented post-hardcore. Those who have followed the group since their founding in 2001 know that there is one must-see Rivals show every year: their Halloween costume party. This year, the Rivals play San Jose Rock Shop with Santa Cruz folk-metal-heads Valensorow and bouncy San Jose punks NVS.
