Description
English singer/songwriter Richard Thompson is a bit of a rock legend who has garnered more critical praise than album sales. Although he has had some brushes with mainstream popularity, they've been scattered and brief. He was first recognized as the innovative young guitarist for the late-'60s folk-rock band Fairport Convention. After spending the '70s making introspective rock albums with his wife, Linda, their last album together, Shoot the Lights from 1982, finally roused the album-buying public. In 1991, his solo album Rumor and Sigh, which has an almost New Wave sound, became a surprising hit. Overall, Thompson's music has maintained a certain dark despairing tone, with intelligent lyrics and no-frills production, which may explain why he has eluded the mainstream most of his career.
