Description

Replace Your Front Lawn With an Eye-Catching Garden

Back by popular demand! Learn how to replace or shrink your front lawn with a garden of flowering and edible plants that provide seasonal interest and drought tolerance. After the class, please allow time to join Kim for a tour of two gardens she designed.

Kim Raftery will discuss alternatives to having a conventional lawn in your front yard, including ways to remove a lawn that has invasive weeds growing in it and how to lay out your new front garden with paths, low fences or walls, planting beds, boulders, seating areas, water features and other garden art. Kim's presentation will include images of beautiful front yard gardens that don't have lawns, including photos that were not in her previous presentations. She will briefly explain the Santa Clara Valley Water District's landscape rebate program for removal of at least 75 square feet of turf grass and replacing it with drought tolerant plants and efficient irrigation in the converted area.

Speaker:
Kim Raftery, owner of Raftery Garden Design, has been designing gardens for over 20 years. She and her husband, Kevin, have 65 years of combined experience in garden design and maintenance. They emphasize sustainable garden practices whenever possible by recommending organic garden fertilizers, organic pest and disease management, efficient irrigation practices, and drought tolerant plants. Kim has a B.A. in Fine Arts from Stanford University. One of her gardens was featured on the Gamble Garden Spring Tour of 2010, and another will be featured on the 2017 Spring Tour.
