Description
The concert opens with the Overture from *North by Northwest*, one ofBernard Herrmann’s most celebrated scores from the Alfred Hitchcock film.
The piece, with its constantly alternating rhythms, creates a suspenseful,
slightly off-balance feel that is well-matched to the film’s theme of
mistaken identity.
The orchestra welcomes back soloist Miranda Liu, who will perform Benjamin
Britten’s Violin Concerto. One of the composer’s early masterpieces, the
piece lately has been championed by the world’s leading virtuosi.
Known as Japan's greatest and best-known composer, Takemitsu is recognized
for music that is sensuous, exotic and impressionistic. His *Verse,
Rainbow, Palma* is an extended rhapsody for an unusual duet: oboe d'amore,
played by longtime Redwood Symphony member Peter Stahl, and guitar, played
by Jon Mulvey.
The program closes in celebration of the Lou Harrison centennial with a
performance of his greatest orchestral masterwork, the Third Symphony.
The symphony combines waltz, reel, Javanese gamelan, and other classical
and popular forms to create a wonderfully accessible-yet-exotic hybrid.
