Description
Franz Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 103 (Drumroll)Gustav Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth)
Soloists:Kindra Scharich, mezzo soprano
David Gustafson, tenor
The concert opens with Franz Joseph Haydn’s penultimate Symphony No. 103, nicknamed The Drumroll because of the prominent role of the timpani at the opening of the firstmovement. The absolute genius of Haydn’s instrumental invention as the Inventor of the Symphony is on full, witty display.
Redwood Symphony continues its ongoing cycle of
Gustav Mahler’s works with Das Lied vonder Erde (Song of the Earth), his last completed major symphonic work. The German text is derived from poems written by Li Bai, the wandering poet of the Chinese Tang dynasty.Alternating songs with tenor and mezzo soprano soloists, this all-encompassing work is one of the symphonic literature’s great
meditation on the brevity and sweetness of human life.
Free and ample parking.
Redwood Advantage: Children under 18 accompanied by adult are admitted free!
Online sales end noon before the concert.
