On public display at the 16th Street Mission BART Plaza - Recycling in Color: an exhibition created by youth at Oasis for Girls who participated in a free workshop led by Recology Artist In Residence artist, Nicole Repack. The following is a reflection from Sally, one of the girls who participated in the workshop:
Yesterday the 17th of June was the first day of collaboration workshop with Oasis for girls. I had a lot of fun taking other people's trash and making it into a massive collage. Our goal was to cover a giant piece of paper with our randomly chosen color. The colors we got to pick from were Green (which was my color), Blue, Yellow and Red. We got to work with recycled paper, and I loved it. A lot of the materials that were provided were old Seventeen magazines, most likely from the 60's or 70's, and there were these sheets of image printed paper, that I imagine they were used as wall paper or something. I had a lot of fun cutting different shapes out of all the paper-trying to make different little creatures and shapes. We got to learn a little about the color wheel, and the Artist in Residence Program, which is a program that I had never learned about before- and it's a program that selects artist to go to the recycle center and pick whatever they want to make art out of, and they also get paid; which I think is the coolest thing in the world, because I believe that other people's trash is someone else's treasure. This just shows how people can make cool things out of anything New or Trash. I really enjoyed working with the girls as well they were very welcoming and nice, and Im pretty sure they enjoyed and will further enjoy the project like myself.
