Reconstructed Memories is a series in which Liz Steketee uses personal family photographs to rewrite history from her vantage point. By choosing unrelated images and digitally manipulating them into unlikely combinations, new memories are built. Steketee forges new relationships, addresses old confrontations, imagines different experiences, and faces old demons. She disrupts linear narratives and recomposes events, establishing her family history as a construct. Once these new snapshots have been finalized, they are printed, aged and weathered according to what is appropriate to the content. This rebuilding of memory has allowed her to establish her own version of reality. Reconstructed Memories takes the form of a unique print series as well as a series of reconstructed “false” family photo albums that adhere to Liz Steketee’s revisionist history.
RayKo’s Artist-in-Residence Program
Our residence program was developed to continue our support and education of fine art photographers. The program begins at the start of each workshop semester, so artists can utilize every opportunity to refine their work through the workshops and staff mentoring. There is a three-month timeframe to complete the body of work. Artists gain hands on experience in the entire process of creating images, from conceptualizing, printing, framing, and hanging. Photographs produced in the program will culminate in a solo show in our side gallery. For information on RayKo’s artist-in-residence program, please visit our website.
