Description

Janet and Jon Gibbens have kept chickens in their San Jose backyard for the last 3 years. Besides eggs, the chickens provide bug and pest control, copious amounts of free fertilizer, food scrap recycling, companionship, and hours of entertainment.

Janet and Jon will tell the story of how they got interested in backyard chickens and what steps they followed to go from complete novices to (semi) seasoned chicken owners.

Breed selection, raising chickens from chicks, feeding and housing for chickens, protecting chickens from predators and chicken introductions are a few of the topics that will be covered in the class. Weather permitting, a field trip to the Gibbens' garden will follow the class.

The Workshop fee is $30. For members of the California Native Garden Foundation (CNGF), the cost is $25 and a 10% discount on any plant purchases. (Join CNGF at the workshop for $38 and save $10 on this class and 30% on workshops all year!)

Parking is available on Race Street, side streets, St. Leo's parking lot, and in the Food Basket parking lot on Garland.

RSVP at [email protected] with "Chickens" in the subject line. Payment can be made in advance through Paypal using the Donate button on the cngf.org website or at the event upon arrival. All proceeds benefit the California Native Garden Foundation and ELSEE.
