September 17 is Citizenship Day. Tutorials will be organized to accommodate a naturalization ceremony, which will be conducted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Immigration Station on Angel Island from 11am to noon.

Angel Island was the historic site of West Coast immigration processing from 1910-1949. Amidst the island's ghostly residue of an abandoned army facility, a Nike Missile site, the remains of an immigration processing facility, and groves of Eucalyptus, let's test other ways to belong to a nation. Mary Walling Blackburn and Anhoek School present Radical Citizenship: The Tutorials, a series of one-on-one tutorials for participants with artists, activists, ecologists, and academics from various disciplines. Tutors engage participants in individualized inquiries into the nature of citizenship and its enactment. Together both the tutor and the participant will deconstruct the terms of what it means to be a citizen, upset its definition as based on a principle of exclusion, and redefine it as practice rather than status. The length of each tutorial will be negotiated on site between each participant and tutor, ranging from 5 minutes to an hour.

Visit http://www.soex.org for the full schedule of the tutorials, a map of the Island and more information on the project.
