Description
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of Pure Imagination" is the beloved opening line of the classic Anthony Newley song, performed by Gene Wilder in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the title song of GGMC’s 2012 spring concerts, Pure Imagination. Allow us to take you on a fantastic musical journey through shadows, dreams, fantasy, and magic. We will enchant you with legend and folklore, haunt you with images of mystery and darkness, and inspire you with visions of hope and redemption. This eclectic offering, sung by the rich and expansive voices of GGMC, presents an innovative program, featuring choral music by world-renowned composers. Come and find yourself in the surreal dream world of Chen Yi's Spring Dream, the fierce legendary world of Ko Matsushita's Yagi Bushi, and the mysterious and haunting world of Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s Grim and Glacial Funeral Waltzes. Take a while and dream with us in the exciting new jazz chart of Over the Rainbow by Yumiko Matsuoka, and find yourself exploring the visions of love and longing in William Hawley's setting of Two Sonnets by Shakespeare and Franz Schubert's setting of Goethe's Sehnsucht.
In celebration of GGMC’s 30th anniversary, we present the world premiere of Songs of Love and War by Bay Area composer, David Conte, as well as the choral arrangement of Jay Kuo and Blair Shepard’s It Gets Better, written for the Dan Savage campaign and as a benefit for the Trevor Project of Los Angeles, both commissioned by GGMC. We hope you will join us for an incomparable evening of story and song, for as the title song reveals, "there is no world I know to compare with pure imagination—living there you’ll be free if you truly wish to be.”
