MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Scenes from the Silk Road” -- photographs of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Syria by Frances Freyberg.
The vibrant color photographs feature landscapes, cityscapes, market scenes and portraits from Freyberg’s 2012 travels through Central Asia, as well as her 2008 travels through the Middle East. Highlights include the blue-domed Mir-i Arab madrassa in Bukhara, Uzbekistan; fields of wildflowers in the Fann Mountains of Tajikistan; village girls in the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan; and spices and headscarves for sale in Damascus, Syria.
In addition to signed and framed photographs, there will also be a variety of photo cards for sale from across those four countries.
“As ancient sites along the Silk Road and other important trade routes, cities like Damascus and Bukhara were centers of education, as well as of cultural, religious and artistic exchange,” said Freyberg. “Through my photography, I hope to illustrate the diversity of the landscape, the colorful dress of local women, and the unique Islamic art and architecture that I encountered in Central Asia and also in Syria,” said Freyberg.
Frances Freyberg of Menlo Park specializes in portraits of people, wildlife, nature and architecture from her travels to more than 60 countries. Her photos may be found in galleries and private collections worldwide, as well as online at http://www.francesfreyberg.com. She spent 2008 traveling around the world and building an extensive educational weblog with photos and commentary: http://www.wheresfrances.blogspot.com.
