MENLO PARK, Calif. -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Passage from Silk Road to Japan” - ceramic creations by Misako Kambe of Menlo Park. Misako’s works are inspired by traditional Japanese, Chinese and Persian designs, including Kimono design from her apprenticeship in one of the most distinguished Kimono studios in Kyoto, Japan.

Misako creates her unique designs by free-hand carving with an X-ACTO knife on the surface of the clay. She uses many different firing methods to create a warm and serene feel, including Raku-firing, pit-firing, high-firing and wood-firing. She also works with wood-soda firing techniques at “Hikari-gama kiln” in Elkton, Oregon to add a more rustic collection to the exhibition.

Misako’s ceramic tile “A Piece of Divinity” (ceramic, 8”x8”x1”, 2004, not for sale), inspired by Persian murals, is painted with a fuming agent then fired at low temperature in a Raku kiln. This tile is featured in the book “Making & Installing Handmade Tiles.”

“Vase of Tibetan Cloud” (porcelain, 4.5”x4.5”x6.5”, 2011, $245) is one of Misako’s Tibetan cloud series. In Asian cultures, there are many meanings of “cloud,” one of which is “heaven.” Misako created this series following the March 2011 Japanese earthquake, as a tribute to the life and soul of the victims.
