Description

Whether you are new to poetry and trying to get started, or relatively experienced with it but stuck, just getting ink on the page can be an enormous challenge. Even if you are inspired or have something to say, finding a way into a poem can be frustratingly difficult. “I have heard other poets talk about poems ‘just coming to them’ or ‘falling into their laps’,” says David Rosenthal, “but I rarely, if ever, have that experience myself.”

While you are waiting around for ready-made poems to fall into your lap, why not develop some strategies for generating new material from scratch? In this workshop, David will introduce you to, and lead you through, a series of exercises designed to coax new poems into existence, from simple wordplay to complex thought experiments, from “fake forms” to “translation” games. In the end, you will come away with a set of “jumper cables” in the form of exercises and techniques to help generate new material, overcome blocks, and get your poetry motor running.

David Rosenthal has taught students at every level from kindergarten to college. His poems have appeared in dozens of print and online journals including Measure, Blue Unicorn, Soundzine, Modern Haiku, The Flea, and The Chimaera. He has been a Pushcart Prize nominee, a Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award finalist, and a semi-finalist for both the Richard Wilbur Poetry Award and the Donald Justice Poetry Prize. He lives in Berkeley with his wife and two daughters and teaches kindergarten and first grade in the Oakland public schools.
