Description

Local Color - An Exhibition that Showcases the Urban, Suburban, and Rural Vistas of the Bay Area.

Belmont, California - May 27, 2010 – Local Color will be installed in the Milton Marks Conference Center from July 22 through October 10, 2010. Gallery hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The public reception is Thursday, July 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Milton Marks Conference Center Galleries (lower level) in the Hiram Johnson State Office Building, 455 Golden Gate Ave., in San Francisco.

Twenty-seven artists from the Peninsula Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) have visualized our way of life and the uniqueness of our regional landscapes in two-dimensional mediums that include oils, acrylics, gouache, fiber art, watercolor, and photography.

Local geographic features that often go unnoticed or are taken for granted have inspired several artists. Marian Yap’s acrylic painting on canvas shows earthquake faultlines crisscrossed throughout the state, while fiber artists Bonnie Smith’s “Waves” brings memories of the water’s edge from Bay and Coast.

Leigh Toldi’s gouache on paper artwork presents Local Color as seen not only physically but also as a state of mind. Ruth Waters’ acrylic painting takes the sensations of a mid-summer heat wave and makes them visible.

Alysanne McGaffey, WCA Peninsula Chapter president, comments, “Twenty-seven variations and interpretations on a single theme offer a summer celebratory toast to San Francisco.”

About the Peninsula Women’s Caucus for Art:

More than 30 years ago, the female members of the College Art Association (CAA) formed the Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) during their 1972 CAA National Conference in San Francisco, California. The Northern California Chapter of WCA was formed soon after that and ultimately totaled thirty-plus Chapters across the Country. The Peninsula Chapter was formed in 1991.

The Peninsula Chapter of WCA concentrates on providing exhibition opportunities for women artists, sharing resources and educational networking.
