Description
Paula Harris and her world class band stand out as one of the most unique and funky indie blues bands to have ever emerged from the California music scene. After bursting out in 2012 as one of the top three bands in the world at the International Blues Challenge, the largest Battle of the Bands competitions in existence, they received multiple blues and music award nods for their first album as well as international airplay and media attention. The band’s horn sound called the “Big Ass Brass” is frequently compared by the press and media to another famous California Band, “Tower of Power”. This is most likely because their sound was crafted by Mic Gillette and Tom Politzer of Tower’s famous horn section along with the Grammy Winning (With Etta James) Tom Poole who is now a regular member of Paula’s ensemble. The Big Ass Brass is known for digging deep into the sound known as ‘East Bay Grease” for an outside the box approach to blues.
With the recent passing of Mic Gillette, who is considered one of the greatest horn players to ever live, it was a natural thing for Paula & Crew to take one small step away from their blues roots and one step closer to the jazz-funk hybrid sound Mic helped create as one of the founding members of Tower of Power and Cold Blood among others. The show is aptly named “All About the Brass” and features all the arrangements Mic did for Paula. It also showcases some of Tower of Power and Cold Blood’s music which he helped craft as well as songs that were inspired by the sound he helped create, even though he may not necessarily have had a part in arrangement of. Granted all of these songs sound completely different when delivered by Paula and her Band. This completely new show is a joyous funky romp through some timeless soul for anyone who loves a good horn centric show. It’s two hours that are “ALL ABOUT THE BRASS!”
