Lecture and book signingPhilip J. Dreyfus, Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State University, will discuss his book Our Better Nature: Environment and the Making of San Francisco. The City by the Golden Gate is identified with its natural surroundings – the landscape of hills, dramatic bay setting, engulfing fog, and deadly San Andreas Fault shifting beneath the land. Yet we think of the city itself as separate from this natural environment. Professor Dreyfus will recount the history of San Francisco from Indian village to world-class metropolis, focusing on the interactions between the city, the land, and the generations of people who have transformed them both.
