Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna makes her U.S. debut at Davies Symphony Hall Sunday, March 28 at 6 p.m. The concert is part of the San Francisco Symphony’s organ recital series, new this season, and will feature works by Bach, Liszt, Aivars Kalejs, Prokofiev, and others.



Apkalna is a prizewinner of several international organ and piano competitions, including the 3rd Mikael Tariverdiev Organ Competition (2003) and the Royal Bank Calgary International Organ Competition (2002), where she received the Johann Sebastian Bach prize. Known for taking organ music beyond the borders of the church walls, Apkalna appears in concert throughout the world and has performed in numerous prestigious concert halls in Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, and Leipzig, among others. She made her Berlin Philharmonic debut in Berlioz’s Te Deum in 2007 and is a frequent guest performer at leading music festivals in Europe. Apkalna was awarded the 2005 “Instrumentalist of the Year” ECHO Klassik award. She is the first organist ever to receive this honor.
