Southern Exposure’s video exhibition, Only a Signal Shown, presents the work of over twenty-eight local, national, and international artists through five one-week projects. Each week’s program includes up to five simultaneous large-scale immersive video projections, selected by members of SoEx’s artist-run curatorial committee. Each program draws from different themes, including experimental narratives, humorous performative works, plays on leisure time, and cultural memory and history. Many of the artists included in Only a Signal Shown don’t typically work in video, making this exhibition an opportunity to see a distinct side of their work.

February 1–7, 2013: Week #1, curated by Jonn Herschend, presents short works of experimental and absurdist narrative, with work by Chris Kubick, Lina Lapelyte, Kristin Lucas, Jake Portman & Bill Sneed, Lindsey White, the Wonderment Consortium, and the Zellner Brothers.

February 8–14, 2013: Week #2, curated by Michael Hall, includes works by artists performing ridiculous acts of endurance, with work by Kate Gilmore, Double Zero, Lily McElroy, David Politzer, and Doug Williams.

February 15–21, 2013: Week #3, curated by Michele Carlson, includes work by Mik Gaspay, Ranu Mukherjee, Weston Teruya, Skye Thorstenson, exploring the ways artists use speculative fiction to reframe existing narratives and media forms.

February 22–28, 2013: Week #4, curated by Daniel Nevers and Amanda Eicher, looks at free time and past times, with work by Samara Halperin, Erin Johnson, Camilla Newhagen, and Doug Garth Williams.

March 1–9, 2013: Week #5, curated by Taraneh Hemami, includes work by international artists exploring issues of cultural memory and history.
