Description
One City Block, Dan Sagarin's intimate series of photographs portraying the San Francisco neighborhood north of the Panhandle will be shown at Central Coffee, on Hayes and Central. The comprehensive set of portraits and cityscapes, made in the years 2001 - 2004, both document and seek to draw connections through a widely diverse and transforming urban community.Inspired by both August Sander and Diane Arbus, Sagarin departs from traditional documentary practice by approaching the project from an emotional standpoint. "I began photographing the block where I lived because I was curious. I was relatively new, and felt like an outsider. I realized that I had a strong desire to connect with the place and be part of a community." Recognizing his delicate position led the photographer towards a gentle approach, asking for pictures, not stealing them, and typically only making one photograph of a subject. The resulting images convey a sensitivity rarely seen in street photography.
By exhibiting these photographs now, in 2012, perspective on the neighborhood's transformation is also offered. Faces have changed, children have grown, Victorians been reborn.
