Description
An acclaimed Afro-Brazilian group from Bahia, Olodum takes its name from the Yoruban deity Olodumaré. This juggernaut of voices, horns and percussion was founded as a Carnival association in 1979 to promote black pride through African music, dance theater and art, and is dedicated to the struggle against racial and socioeconomic inequality. In the mid-1980s, when the lead drummer of Olodum mixed together the rhythms of Afro-Caribbean music with the Brazilian samba, the hybrid style “samba-reggae” resulted. These new rhythms have dominated Bahian Carnival ever since. The group has become internationally known through the release of more than 20 albums. It has performed in 18 countries and worked with Paul Simon (Rhythm of the Saints), Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson and Spike Lee. Olodum’s exuberant music and colorful show is an experience not to be missed.More Info
