Oakland East Bay Symphony continues its exploration of rich musical cultures by featuring new works written by two prominent Filipino jazz musicians and composers on its program, "Notes from the Philippines," on April 20, 2012, at 8 p.m. at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre. Jazz pianist and composer Victor Noriega draws on his heritage of Filipino songs in a new work, entitled Generations, Directions, written expressly for Oakland East Bay Symphony. In addition, local jazz artist Art Khu will also present a new work, on an evening infused with classical, jazz and Filipino folk elements. Rising star and Oakland native, Filipino cellist David Requiro, will make his Oakland East Bay Symphony debut playing Dvořák’s powerful Cello Concerto, and another composer of the Romantic era, Felix Mendelssohn, will be featured when Oakland East Bay Symphony begins the evening with the Ruy Blas Overture. "Notes from the Philippines" is supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and by the East Bay Fund for Artists at the East Bay Community Foundation and the performance is sponsored in part by KPMG LLP. The San Francisco Filipino-American Jazz Festival and Filipino-American National Historical Society are Community Partners for the concert.
