Description

"New Works by abstract painter Walter James Mansfield
Material and structure are explored by this pioneer CALIFORNIA painter. Mansfield's distinctive pouring method captures our attention with a fine balance of methodical intention and automatic responsiveness to the medium. These new paintings by Mansfield encapsulate the vision of an artist whose work is similar to that of a poet. Each painting is wholly self-reliant, operating in the present as a reflection of Mansfield's meditative experience. Mansfield's subjects consistently remain landscape and portraiture.

Mansfield has lived most of his life in California. UC Davis awarded him an undergraduate degree in fine art and psychology in 1987. His education continued at the California State University of Sacramento, where he got a Master’s degree in studio art in 1999. In 1997, he received an Artreach grant from the Nelson Gallery ARTfriends organization to develop a community art project in collaboration with mental health clients. Mansfield still devotes some of his time to social work. He completed his studies in 2001 at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he got his MFA in painting and drawing. Walter James Mansfield has a BA in Noumenon is on view at Vessel Gallery through September 25." - courtesy of http://www.happenstand.com
