What happens when you pull three seemingly unlikely musicians together? While trumpeter/composer Darren Johnston comes from a background in jazz and experimental/improvised music, accordionist Rob Reich has honed his playing and compositional abilities through his intensive study of Klezmer, Balkan music, and other folk forms, including rock and roll. The trio’s bass player, Daniel Fabricant has worked primarily with cabaret acts, and singer-songwriters, as well as in symphonic settings. They discovered that when creating music together, they were each pushed into territory that was unfamiliar, challenging, and also extremely enjoyable.Inspired by this realization, the Root Exchange was born. Funded by the Friends of SF Chamber Music, concerts feature different guest artist each month. August features Brass Menazeri leader Peter Jaques. Piano innovator Myra Melford joins on Sept.4, percussionists Faisal Zedan and Dave Mihaly on Oct. 2. Season finale Oct.9 at the deYoung.
