Description

On Saturday, March 9, ATA Gallery’s OTHER CINEMA steps into its 3-part Psycho-Geography suite with a program of contemporary film, video, and performance from the challenged Caribbean nation of Haiti.

Three years after a devastating earthquake, the Haitian people still struggle to rebuild, both physically and culturally. In a benefit for Ekspresyons Art Center in the still rubble-strewn town of Jakmel, OC joins Ilona Berger and Ivy McClelland in mounting a forum for fresh voices of resilience and creativity after the disaster.

Jean-Guerly Pétion initiates the show with a multi-media dance piece. Désirée Dorsainvil sets off the second half with original choreography, drawn from both Afro-Haitian and Modern traditions. Recent émigré Zaka sojourns from SoCal to personally introduce his new motion-picture work.

ALSO pieces by Maksaens Denis, Louis Ebby Angel, Guy Regis, Romel Jean-Pierre, and Alex Art Louis from TeleGhetto.

Ms. Berger comes up from Los Angeles to contribute her curatorial commentary, and Ms. McClelland shares slides from her many visits to the “Ghetto-Biennale” there. Come early for artists’ reception with world-renowned rum.
