Description

Introducing three wildly creative and strikingly beautiful new works of Japanese anime. All films presented in their original Japanese language, with English subtitles.

Welcome To The Space Show
By Koji Masunari
Thu, Jan 8 & Sat, Jan 10, 7 PM; Sun, Jan 11, 2 PM

This colorfully explosive debut feature sets a new high for visual spectacle in what has to be one of the most gleefully surreal depictions of intergalactic life ever portrayed in cinema. It seems like just another lazy summer is in store for Amane and her older cousin Natsuki. Their boredom quickly vanishes when they find an injured dog in the woods and bring him back to camp – only to discover that he is not a dog at all, but Pochi, an alien botanist sent to Earth to track down a rare and powerful plant. As a thank you for nursing him back to health, Pochi whisks the kids away to a space colony on the dark side of the moon, an interstellar melting pot with a non-stop parade of dynamic alien creatures, jellyfish spaceships, and dragon trains. (2014, 136 min, DCP)

Patema Inverted
By Yasuhiro Yoshiura
Thu, Jan 15 & Sat, Jan 17, 7 PM; Sun, Jan 18, 2 PM

A thrilling sci-fi adventure about two kids separated by opposing cultures and gravitational forces. While exploring a forbidden area in her underground world of abandoned ruins and tunnels, Patema tumbles into a void, and out into the wide-open world above the surface, where the laws of physics are reversed and she "falls” into the sky. A young student on the surface world, Age, discovers Patema hanging upside-down (or downside-up) from a tree and pulls her to safety. Acting as a counter-weight for one another, they master the art of navigating competing gravitational forces and set out to evade the totalitarian leaders that rule the surface world and discover the disastrous secret that keeps them apart. (2014, 99 min, DCP)

The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya
By Isao Takahata
Thu, Jan 22 & Sat, Jan 24, 7 PM; Sun, Jan 25, 2 PM

“…a visionary tour de force.” – Variety

Legendary Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko) revisits Japan’s most famous folktale in this gorgeous, hand-drawn masterwork, decades in the making. Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter and his wife, a tiny girl grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady. The mysterious young princess enthralls all who encounter her – but ultimately she must confront her fate... (2014, 137 min, DCP)

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
by Mami Sunada
Sat, Jan 31, 12:15, 2:30, 5:30 & 8 PM
Granted full access to the notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, this new documentary follows the three men who are the studio's lifeblood – director Hayao Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzuki, and the elusive Isao Takahata – over the course of a year as they rush to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The result is a rare “fly on the wall” glimpse of the inner workings of one of the world’s most celebrated animation studios, and an insight into the dreams, passion, and singular dedication of these remarkable creators. (2014, 118 min, digital)
