Description

Drawing inspiration from jazz, blues and traditional Ethiopian melodies and rhythms, Nefasha Ayer (loosely translated from Amharic as “the wind that travels”) is an in-progress body of music that explores the most essential qualities shared among individuals worldwide whose identity no longer fits within the boundaries of one country, culture or tradition. Through its tones and colors, poetic texts and trans-cultural melodic scores, Nefasha Ayer joins the continents of Africa, South Asia and America to produce a uniquely San Franciscan music—a music born from present-day realities of life at the crossroads.

Nefasha Ayer combines the talented song-writing capacity of Ethiopian-born vocalist Meklit Hadero with guitarist/composer-arranger Todd Brown, South-Indian Carnatic jazz composer/saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan, composer/bassist Eliyahu Sills, drummer Mohini Rustagi, Kenyan percussionist Abdi Jibril, and Keenan Webster on balafon/kora/mbira.
