Description
Naoshima AbstractedAn exhibition of photographs by Steve Goldband and Ellen Konar
Exhibit continues though March 31
Large scale, bold and serene photographs from the remarkable Japanese island of Naoshima will be on view at the Urban Hardwoods showroom in San Francisco
The photographs, taken on this remote island in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, capture the beauty and serenity of the contemporary art and architecture for which Naoshima has become known. The images are at home and in complete harmony in the new Urban Hardwoods San Francisco showroom of asian-inspired aesthetic unique functional and sculptural wood furniture sustainably made from reclaimed wood.
Steve Goldband and Ellen Konar, Palo Alto-based photographers, exhibit this series inaugurating the showroom and gallery space. These photographs, some humble, some heroic, reveal this very particular urban landscape-- the colors and forms and light of this setting. They depict the magic of the interplay between the architecture of the remarkable Tadao Ando and the unqiue setting in rural Japan. The viewer can expect to be engaged, challenged and sometimes even befuddled by the interplay of forms, textures and compositions captured in the images.
Just as a slice through a humble log from a nearly discarded elm tree reveals the remarkable form, texture and color that has been locked inside, the photographs capture views of Naoshima rarely seen by even the most ambitious traveler or afficionado of contemporary art and architecture.
The opening reception on December 3 will provide light refreshments and and an opportunity to view the photographs, meet Steve & Ellen and hear the story of their craft and work. The gallery photographs and the accompanying book, Naoshima Abstracted, will be available for purchase. The exhibition will remain on display through March 31, 2009.
Urban Hardwoods is the source of fine furniture made from sustainable and reclaimed wood. Made in Seattle from trees that would have been otherwise been lost, each piece is unique. The color and figure of the wood, the touch of the craftsman's hand, the shape and size can never be duplicated. Urban hardwoods craftsmen know where the tree grew. They take responsibility for its second life and are proud of their work.
