Description
The Jancar Jones Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of work by Bay Area artist, Nancy White. The exhibit will include both oil paintings on steel and acrylic paintings on paper. An offset print edition of 100 will be produced to coincide with the exhibit. In her work, White constructs a liminal area between physical presence and situational flexibility in which the distinction between what is painted and what the eye perceives is often unresolved. In spite of her hard-edged painting technique, the shifting canvases of bent steel become the basis for a visual experience of impermanence in which neither color nor shape remain concrete. White uses the wall around her paintings on steel to produce soft optical effects – the white walls revealing the reflected traces of vivid, often hidden, fields of color and fluctuating cast shadows. Contingent upon the angle by which they are viewed, these paintings can appear three-dimensional or flattened, perspectivally uncertain.
