Nancy Calef, known globally for her innovative 3D “Peoplescapes,” on 6/12/08 will introduce the latest progression of her iconoclastic style by cutting through the plane of one or more existing paintings and integrating them into one unified work.“Art with an attitude” is how former SF Mayor Willie Brown describes Calef’s particularly timely paintings in this election year; her Peoplescapes shrewdly address cultural and political issues facing society by sculpting characters on the canvas and applying objects to it. Juxtaposing people in recognizable places and situations, and filled with layers of detail, symbolism and humor, each painting weaves together a story about contemporary life. “Brueghel meets the underground stylings of Spain and S. Born in Bronx, NY, Calef began studying painting and sculpture at the College of New Rochelle at age 15. She has been exhibiting internationally since 1984.
