SAN JOSE, CA – On March 25, 2012 the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, JAMsj, Youth group is proud to present a screening of Citizen Tanouye, an award winning documentary about a diverse group of Torrance, CA high school students who embark on a journey to uncover the story of Tech Sgt. Ted Tanouye, a recipient of the Medal of Honor awarded for his valor in combat while serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated unit. The students discover the impact the war had on their city and of the civil rights abuses in America during the WWII era. Citizen Tanouye features two former Northern CA veterans, Kiyoshi Yoshii of Hayward and Rudy Tokiwa of Sunnyvale. The event will be held at 1pm at JAMsj, located at 535 North 5th Street in San Jose.
Keynote speaker Kats Hikido, a veteran of the 442nd will share his experiences of serving in Southern France and Italy, where he was wounded in action by a landmine blast that killed two of his fellow soldiers. Kats Hikido is among the recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the U.S., which was awarded to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion, and Military Intelligence Service at an award ceremony in Washington D.C. in November of 2011. A local Congressional Gold Medal ceremony was held in San Jose in February of this year, and other regional ceremonies are being held throughout the U.S.
Robert Horsting, the Producer and Co-Director of Citizen Tanouye will share his insights into the making of the documentary from the initial interviews with Ted’s classmates, friends, and family to the films strong connection with high school students and a wider audience who want to learn more about this true American hero.
The JAMsj Youth group will present the details the first ever JAMsj Youth Poetry Scholarship.
