Description
Bay Area filmmaker Jennifer Steinman will present and discuss her moving documentary Motherland, which received the audience award at the South by Southwest Film Festival. In 2006 six diverse women made an intensive pilgrimage to work as volunteers with children in rural South Africa. Strangers to each other before the journey, the women had in common one life-changing experience: each had suffered the death of a child. Motherland follows these women as they cope with their grief while working in an area marked by devastation, from poverty to AIDS, and it shows their transformation as they discover hope and healing in their experience. Four of the women are scheduled to join Steinman on stage at the Rafael: Barbara Crandall, Kathy Jimenez, Anne Magill, Debbi Rath. Camera: Mira Chang, Karen Landsberg. Editor/Producer/Director: Jennifer Steinman. (US 2009) 80 min.
