LA Weekly listed Sumney as one of "10 L.A. Bands Who Will Blow Up In 2014." He has continued to astonish audiences in his hometown of Los Angeles. Buzzbands LA referred to his sound as "evocative folk-soul" and called him a "one-man spectacle live," going on to say that "no artist in recent memory has gone from zero to must-see more quickly than Sumney."
