For a heavy metal New Year’s Eve in the South Bay, this show is your best best. It’s generally accepted that Ronnie Montrose is responsible for the first heavy metal album. It was the self-titled debut of his equally eponymous band, released back in 1973, and it featured the vocals of a young Sammy Hagar. But there was a far more important connection to Van Halen and the wave of metal bands that would come up with them—without Montrose’s guitar playing, they would probably never have existed. It wasn’t really until the last 10 years that Montrose’s influence was fully acknowledged, and he dutifully reassembled a band and took to the road to show a new generation of metal fans where the 80s guitar gods stole their thunder from.
