Description
If you had to assemble a jazz band and you could only pick members from one regional jazz festival, it’d be tough to overlook the talent present at Monterey Jazz. But don’t worry about collecting players- they’re already gathered as the Monterey Jazz Festival All Stars band. Leading the group is pianist Kenny Barron, a veteran jazz man who, barely out of his teens, joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band in 1962. Barron is joined by violinist Regina Carter, a well-versed jazz player in her own right, having issued albums for Atlantic Records early in her career before settling into a period of startling creative expression in the late ‘90s. Vocalist Kurt Elling, guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, and drummer Johnathan Blake round out the All Star band.
