Description
The Montclair Sidewalk Fine Arts and Crafts Fall Fest returns to Oakland Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Montclair Village Association, this free event showcases works from more than 70 artists and crafters who will line the streets of the Montclair Business District displaying a wide array of handcrafted works including garments, sculptures, photography, watercolor and oil paintings, jewelry, ceramics and more. All of the artists will be on hand to visit with patrons while some will be demonstrating their craft during the show. This year’s featured artists include:Robert Kahl
Studio: Nevada City
Medium: Glass
His Art: Jewelry, paperweights and other blown glass creations
Creative Process: Robert started his artistic career as a glassblower's apprentice over 20 years ago and since then has worked with many glass artists and has developed his own style. He is passionate about combining color, texture, and form into each piece while also concentrating on the importance of quality, technique and originality. Robert looks for elements found in nature to inspire him and incorporates them into his work. Using methods of fusing, casting, and slumping, he creates stunning art. Robert’s collection will inspire you to look at the natural world in a new way.
Paula Riley
Studio: Walnut Creek
Medium: Oil paint and canvas or museum quality boards
Her Art: Paintings
Creative Process: “What excites me about painting is trying to capture the mood of the moment or of the season. I strive to convey color, texture and harmony and a little excitement, with each painting,” said Paula. “I am devoted to the expression found in the brush or palette knife through the application of paint. I am interested in light and shadow, in warm and cool, and texture. I strive to take my paintings beyond what is seen by the eye, and to create a mood or feeling through color and composition. I enjoy telling the story of each painting.”
Susan Koenig
Studio: Alameda
Medium: Wool
Her Art: Handcrafted felted wool purses, bags and accessories
Creative Process: All of Susan’s products are handcrafted from wool yarn, sometimes in combination with other types of fibers. The pieces are sewn together and finished by hand. Agitation and hot water used during the washing process cause the wool to shrink and form a dense, soft fabric called felted or boiled wool. Washing can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending upon the type of wool and other characteristics of the yarn. The resulting felted wool is soft and luxurious to the touch, but strong and durable. Felted wool is an ideal material for bags, purses, handbags, hats, and many accessories. Susan’s product will last many years, even with constant wear. Because felted wool bags have a tendency to stretch with heavy contents, all full sized bags are fully lined, including the straps (if felted).
