Description
This fall Aldea presents an exhibition of New York artist Molly Dilworth's hanging banners paired with a selection of artist designed patterns entitled One Yard Sample. Dilworth is known for painting huge swaths of Times Square's pedestrian plazas and entire rooftops—visible best via Google Earth. Her striking patterns follow in a tradition from Wassily Kandinsky, who employed folk traditions to generate new forms of abstraction, and Mary Heilmann, who renders everyday snapshots as unmoored fields of color. The works on view are part of Paradise Valley, a series of banners and flags Dilworth has been creating while working on projects in Vermont, Kansas, New York and Seattle. The fabric base is made of remaindered materials from home decorating and fashion trades, which is then is collaged into banners and over-painted with patterns extrapolated from digitally sourced photographs she collects relating to her research on American history, trade routes and the ethics of capitalism. The results are hybridized forms that seem familiar yet are unmoored from their origin.Alongside Dilworth's artwork, Aldea is thrilled to debut a collection of original patterns commis- sioned from artists with active studio practices and a perspective on applied design. Aldea has printed and mounted one yard fabric samples of repeating patterns created by Deric Carner, Rebecca Ebeling, Molly Dillworth, Mark Golamco, Natalia Nakazawa, Nathalie Roland, Leah Rosenberg, and Phillip Stearns. These exciting patterns will be available exclusively to Aldea customers as pillows, wallpapers, curtains, and custom upholstery.

Molly Dilworth is a Brooklyn-based artist who views creative practice as a form of research. Using data from a specific site as a structure, she gives form to things that invisibly motivate our actions. From rooftops to the Pedestrian plazas of Times Square, Dilworth has created outdoor site-specific paintings in New York City and exhibited across the United States. She has been a resident artist at the Salina Art Center in Kansas and in the Art & Law Program with the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in NYC.
