Description
One of the first things you notice on the Mini Mansions song, "Monk," is the dry, bouncing bass line, which sounds like it's coming straight from the fingers of Sir Paul McCartney and his Hofner 500/1 violin bass. The technique of Mini Mansions bassist Michael Shuman (also of Queens of the Stone Age) is clearly part of the reason the group has drawn comparisons to The Beatles. But that's not the only reason. Mini Mansions have an ear for compact, pop songcraft and do a lot with a little, as on their cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass," a stripped-down, slowed-down, tuned-down, synthed-out version of the classic tune. Local band The Record Winter opens for Mini Mansions. (Nick Veronin)
