Solo Exhibition of Paintings by Christine Ferrouge at Autobody Fine Art, Alameda CA

What is inside the mind of a child? 

Ferrouge paints to ask questions about the identity and future of children today. Her models are often her own three daughters, or their friends, and the narrative is anthropological and universal.  These paintings are insightful windows into the child’s world of serious play, where the outside world--and the viewer--is secondary to their own contemplation and imagination.

Most of Ferrouge’s paintings offer a presence that might be unexpected ... the figures of children are larger than life, confronting the viewer with not only size but also boldness in color and rough brush marking. The paintings speak of the artist's great control and choice of color. The gestural qualities and rough treatment of paint is stylistically reminiscent of Impressionists like Manet, while at times turning as bold as the Abstract Expressionists.  The compositions often hint at old master paintings of royalty. 


About the artist:

Ferrouge studied art in Florence, Italy; the Dominican Republic; Amsterdam and throughout the midwest. The artist grew up in Minnesota and received a BFA in painting from the University of Evansville, Indiana. After passionately teaching in inner city Chicago and Los Angeles, Ferrouge moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006 and currently creates paintings in Uptown Oakland at the Werkshack.

Mind of the Child includes new work and paintings from the artist’s series; Princess Hero (2015) and Children in the Valley (2017).
