Please join us for a Mills Repertory Dance Company Performance of Trisha Brown’s Planes, 1968. Performances will take place at 5:30 and 5:45 pm.

Early in her career, Brown created works in which performers walked on the walls of a gallery or down the exterior façade of a building—rather than on the floor. The current Mills College Art Museum exhibition, Trisha Brown: So That the Audience Does Not Know Whether I Have Stopped Dancing, takes inspiration from Brown’s interest in reorienting the performer and audience, with a performance installation that places live dancers on the wall of the gallery, and a participatory audio work that invites visitors to lie on the gallery floor and contemplate the ceiling. The former work, Planes, 1968 is a major early performance that includes a film by Jud Yalkut and soundtrack by Simone Forti; the latter, Skymap, 1969 was Brown’s one attempt to engage the ceiling as a performative surface.

This program is presented in conjunction with Trisha Brown: So That the Audience Does Not Know Whether I Have Stopped Dancing on view at the Mills College Art Museum from through March 14, 2010.

The Mills Repertory Dance Company enables students to perform a range of well-known works from acclaimed choreographers on a proscenium stage in the College's Lisser Hall. In some cases, Mills students have the unique opportunity to be directed by and work with the choreographers themselves. Students perform on campus for a large Bay Area audience and tour on a limited basis for local community engagements.
