This is our 4th year producing a Youth Shakespeare play for theater lovers in Scotts Valley. Our 30 + member cast of Scotts Valley and SLV young people is composed of kids aged 9 - 15, with a few younger kids who will be playing fairies. We also have guest adult actors, Larry Hardison and Pam Leonard playing Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies.
This performance of Shakespeare's much loved Midsummer Night's Dream, adapted for younger actors by Ken Womble and published by Eldridge Publishing Company, will provide great entertainment for all ages. The play runs about a hour and a half and is true to Shakespeare's original plot and beautiful language. Director Trish Melehan has set the play at the "Athens Commune" located somewhere in the Santa Cruz Mountains, circa the late 1960's. While the "hippie" characters inhabit Athens, they will be singing and dancing to Beatles music, provided by DJ Orion, a local Scotts Valley financial advisor during the day. However, when the famous sets of lovers enter the forest, they will be transported to a magical land replete with fairies, magic potions, and that famous prankster, Puck. This is a "living forest" where fairies and trees sing and dance to authentic Elizabethan music. Local harpist Alexandra Romanoff will provide live music for their antics. Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedic masterpiece, so our accomplished actors will be looking for lots of laughs as they perform this most hilarious comedy.
