Description
Where Nepenthe Flows and All Hallows Eve, an exhibit of work by San Francisco photographer Michael Starkman, will open at Corden|Potts Gallery on February 16 and run through March 27. A reception for the artist, which will be open to the public, will take place on Saturday, February 20, from 2 to 5 pm.Corden/Potts Gallery is located at 49 Geary Street, Suite 211. The gallery is open 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, and until 7:30 pm on the first Thursday of each month.
Starkman's lush gelatin silver prints combine both an artistic and a spiritual element. "Relinquishing control at the time of capture, I trust the viewfinder to point me toward beauty, allowing the intervention of camera and film to co-create the negatives," Starkman says. "The final form is a gift, discovered rather than pre-visualized, the result of a creative process sustained through long collaboration with happenstance, luck – or spirit – rather than confined to a single decisive moment."
Michael Starkman started making photographs after training in drawing and printmaking. His work is in public and private collections in the United States and Europe, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Harry Ransom Center for the Humanities in Austin, Texas, and the Hollar Gallery in Prague. He has shown in solo and group exhibitions including a solo exhibit at the Foto and Photo Festival in Cesano Maderno, Italy in 2006 and a two-artist show at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco in 2008.
Starkman has an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught in the visual arts departments of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Southeastern Louisiana University. He presently teaches in the art and design program at UC Berkeley Extension and at the
