Description

Mere Top is a group exhibition and screening that brings together work by Bay Area artists and the Berlin-based feminist collaborative ƒƒ, self-described as “a frame for a living and evolving network of women artists...formed around a constantly shifting discussion of contemporary feminist and participatory practices.” The videos included in Mere Top present some touchstones within this shifting network through a constellation of affective relationships borne out of friendship and collaboration.

Curator Christina Linden’s involvement with ƒƒ began in the fall of 2012 when she contributed a series of videos entitled “Front Tier, Back Water” to Temporäre Autonome Zone (TAZ), a feminist archive of materials, events, and discussions ƒƒ created during a residency at Galerie Lisa Ruyter (Vienna). Mere top at the Royal NoneSuch Gallery is a mirror project curated in response to the videos that were archived for TAZ. These videos will be installed as as a pair of intersecting loops and will be up for the duration of the show. A screening on March 22 will feature videos by Bay Area artists included in “Front Tier, Back Water” along with additional works by members of ƒƒ.

What is the place of contemporary feminism? For ƒƒ, answers are logged somewhere in a territory marked by Anais Nin, legitimate pursuit of the ecstatic state, and moon goddess worship recreated as experimental archeology. In this zone, dancers shape their bodies around elements of the urban landscape à la Valie Export’s Rounding Off and men were solicited online to have their testicles photographed.
