Before there was Matt & Kim, or the Submarines, there was Mates of States. I doubt that makes them the original cute-indie-rock-duo-in-a-relationship, but they certainly upped the awww factor, and hopelessly in love hipster musicians have never looked back. Debuting with a pretty stark organ-and-drum dominated sound, they've evolved considerably, and last year's Mountaintops showed off their most expansive full-band sound yet.
