"Masks & Meditations", a Group Show

Moraga Art Gallery will feature the work of guest artist Susan Heller in its new show, Nov 1 -Dec. 24. The public is invited to view Heller’s fabric art along with gallery members’ work at the show’s opening reception, Nov 12, 3-5 p.m.

Heller uses her quilts to explore states of mind and delves into the spiritual and inner worlds of others. Although re-imagined, many appear to have come out of Africa. Others interpret spirit boards New Guinea tribesmen used in their ceremonial invocations to their spirit protectors.

"As far back as I can remember, I was always sewing something,” said Heller. “It was inevitable that as an adult I found my way to quilt-making.”

Heller’s work falls outside the traditional function of quilts as each piece is intended to hang as a work of art. She enjoys using applique for its added dimension and embellishes with hand-embroidery, beading or both.

Moraga Art Gallery also has the pleasure to have 4 additional local guest artists by invitation: Tamara Selvig, a ceramic artist, will be exhibiting her functional pottery, and her unique raku sculptural figures; Lauren Ekman, from Orinda, will display her colorful, handmade glass beads and jewelry; Judith Hoff Brooks, a metalsmith, whose jewelry designs are hand fabricated, marrying metals of fine gold and silver metals into works of art, sometimes incorporating precious and semi-precious stones; and, Kary Stickney, a landscape artist who will display her miniature paintings of California regional landscapes.

Moraga Art Gallery is a collective of 16 established, local artists and artisans. The public is invited to visit, Tuesday – Sunday, 12 – 5 p.m. MAG is tucked in a corner north of CVS in the Rheem Center in Moraga.
