Description

Focusing her collages around images of landscapes, Polish-born artist Martyna Szczesna draws on the aesthetic clichés of scenic calendars and postcards in order to mine their manufactured sense of nostalgia and longing. Fascinated by the simultaneous power and disposability of the photographic image, Szczesna uses the collage process to dismantle that which she finds beautiful, thereby turning one into hundreds of precious objects. With these “broken landscapes,” Szczesna builds a resonance between process and content. In a literal sense, her landscapes are pieced and pasted together, while the places depicted are themselves in a state of entropy.

In conjunction with the show, a zine of Szczesna's smaller collage pieces will be available. Cartoonist Karl Dotter worked with the artist to design a handmade typeface containing 26 glyph shapes inspired by the show. As a function of the zine, the font will be available for reuse under a creative commons license.
