Description

One of the premier jazz pianists of his generation, Marcus Roberts is familiar with playing solo and with big bands and even symphony orchestras. For 2018 Summer Fest, he leads the Modern Jazz Generation, a lush-sounding medium-sized multi-generational ensemble that will perform his always thoughtful original compositions.

With his Modern Jazz Generation large ensemble, Roberts and his regular triomates (Rodney Jordan, double bass and Jason Marsalis, drums) are joined by three generations of instrumentalists and mentees on saxophones, clarinet, trumpets and other brass.

Roberts first came to national prominence as a member of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' quartet. The winner of the inaugural Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano competition, he would go on to explore the foundational innovations of jazz piano masters such as Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk as well as the legacies of Scott Joplin and George Gershwin. Blessed with ferocious technique as well as deep soul, he's a piano player's piano player and a jazz fan's best friend.
