Description
Since Lynryd Skynyrd’s front man and chief songwriting talent Ronnie Van Zant’s fatal plane crash in 1977, southern rock fans have been left to wonder what could have been if the group had continued issuing their seemingly immaculate blend of blues and boogie-rock hits. The elements of rock & roll greatness were in place right out the gates, when Van Zant along with guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington teamed up to create their southern-fried blues-rock perfection as a high-school super-group. After the band’s breakup in the wake of the tragic plane crash, it seemed that the only way to hear “Free Bird” live was to head to your local dive bar; luckily in the late ‘80s, the group re-formed with Ronnie Van Zant’s youngest brother Johnny handling the vocals. The band’s recently released album God and Guns certainly fulfills the group’s iron-clad legacy, offering up a spirited, though country-tinged set of classic-rock gems.
